Murdoch must now be stopped

The News of the world scandal highlights everything that is wrong with society in that a global business can hold such influence over our public officials. The fact that Rupert Murdoch owns four newspapers and is looking to complete the takeover of BskyB is testament to the problem.  The truth is public figures have being running scared of News International and have courted there favour as a path to election success. This charge can be levelled at all political party’s and confirms the problem that no one person or organisation should have a disproportionate control of the media. The arrogance that is still being displayed by the executive level at News International is staggering any other company or even government would have accepted the resignation of Rebekah Brooks who is without question tainted by this sordid affair.  The release into the public domain of squalid revelations of phone hacking of murder victims and the family’s of war heroes and victims of terrorist attacks has finally given our political leaders the guts to speak out. There are many in the political class who have felt this for years but have been too scared to speak out that statement alone should lead them to the required action.

The monopoly’s commission should not have allowed one individual to purchase so many Newspapers this situation should now be reversed and they should be broken up into independent company’s. The closure of the News of the World as an attempt to defuse the situation is I have to admit a stroke of genius to close a business and save on costs and expand an existing business. That said this is the time to put a stop to this Jeremy Hunt needs to show that the UK will no longer accept this dictator and block Mr Murdoch from purchasing BskyB. At every point regulation has failed the British people The Press Complaints commission has to go as they have consistently failed to deal with this cancer. Offcom surely do not believe News International have demonstrated that they are fit to own a broadcaster.  Vince Cable declared war on Murdoch and was immediately stung and stripped of his power to make the decision on BskyB today he must feel vindicated. The remaining concern on regulation must be why are the metropolitan Police being allowed to investigate themselves in relation to the questionable investigation and the allegations of payments this to must be addressed for the public to be able to have confidence that this is coming to an end. This is all down to a mistake years ago allowing one corporation to control 40% of newspapers in this country.

The Conservative party have benefited greatly from the support of Mr Murdoch so the biggest hypocrite in this is David Cameron. He was forced to act by Ed Miliband at PMQs his performance in trying to deal with this on a basis of a PR exercise tells the British public all they need to know. There is no substance behind the man he is exposed as a poor decision maker by his appointment of Andy Colson and the baggage he brought with him. Colson has been arrested one can only assume on the basis of new evidence which if detailing he new about the criminal activity he will be guilty of perjury and will most likely end up with a custodial sentence. He was allowed to work at the centre of government there seems to be a arrogance that power brings in that you are not accountable like the rest of us. Well Mr Cameron times are changing and you are involved in this sad affair I hope the public will see this and the next resignation will be yours.

Twittergate

At the meeting of Worcester City Council on Tuesday 5th July Cllr Adrian Gregson raised a point of order regarding the use of social media during council meetings. He specifically named Cllr Riaz and also mentioned members of the press as the constitution was written before Twitter the Mayor upheld the complaint. I have read Cllr Riaz blog detailing his outrage that free speech was being stifled and to be fair I thought he made his points very well and it is difficult to disagree with much of his comment. But in common with a number of interested party's on Twitter there is an incorrect assumption that this was an attempt to stop free speech.

The point that know one has acknowledged is the reference to the press. The Worcester News political reporter David Pain is a prolific Tweeter during council meetings and can sometimes be opinionated on an issue or a party. As the Worcester news regularly points out they are the only paper present and as such the medium that most members of the public get there information on council meetings and no doubt form there opinion. So is it not conceivable that if councilors are following David during the meeting his tweets could unduly influence what they say and do in the meeting to obtain favorable coverage. It would follow that this could go through into articles and gain unfair advantage in the reporting. I am not suggesting the Worcester news is News International but in my opinion this was the basis of the complaint.
